Planning Ahead—Potty Training

Today during my lunch break I did laps at Target, which is my absolute favorite thing to do. I say laps, but really I just kill time and roam the store looking for hidden steals and bargains. I had a point of going to Target today, though: I was checking out the potty chairs. We think Ben is getting to the point where he might actually start potty training! There are so many options and I need your help and advice! Do you get a portable potty you can take anywhere? Do you buy the smaller seat to put on top of your toilet? I spotted a Lightning McQueen potty seat that I'd consider because of his obsession with Cars (really it's becoming insane!) I have so many questions and think I probably need to read a book on the subject. Any good books out there? What works best for boys? Any tips or advice?

Just let me know what you find out that works because we've tried EVERYTHING! Ben will be potty-trained before Tommy! And Tommy's almost FOUR!

UM, yeah please pass on info this way! We bought a potty seat too, we were sure to get one with a gaurd (Natalie's didn't have one) so we don't have to hold any...um...parts down! LOL! And also the one we finally decided on can be used on the regular potty for when they are transitioning to that. We haven't used it yet, but it is sitting in the living room, so B can get used to seeing it there. He knows it is his potty. And when he mentions it we ask if he wants to sit on it. We aren't quite to the point of pushing him on it every hour yet, I heard boys will train when they want too! Which scares me!

I would buy both, it helps when they are in a hurry if you have 1 on the toilet and 1 in another spot where he spends the most time. I let my boys go naked except for a t shirt and spend about 2 to 3 days just sitting on it. We basically picked a movie and a few quiet activities like coloring and stayed home for 2 days. Keep a towel handy or better yet keep the potty on a hard floor. It was all about going potty. My youngest actually showed his "accomplishment" to the repair man who was at our house. Just be patient and slow, boys take forever! Hope this helps...

I love doing laps at Target as well. I really do not think I have enough experience to give advice... just good luck! I just keep telling myself to be patient and happy with the progress Mary is slowly making. And like you mom said the other night, no kid goes to college without being potty trained. :-)
