Another Movie Review: Wall-E
I know what you're all thinking. I'm a huge Pixar fan, this is one of the best reviewed movies of the year and I LOVED it, right? Well, not so much.
I wanted to love this movie. I wanted to think it was the "best movie ever made" that some were pegging it as. But pretty quickly into it I had a feeling where it was going and I just didn't like it.
Don't get me wrong. The animation is amazing. The characters of Wall-E and Eve are some of the best, most compassionate and lovable characters I have ever seen. I just wish that they had gone another direction with this movie. It was so out there John and I almost wondered if they were trying to be ironic or they really felt the way that they portrayed in this movie. My issue? It's too preachy. It's too anti-big business, it's too environmentalist. Granted, I do believe we need to take care of our planet, but I am not one of those people that wants to take away my liberties just to achieve that. Okay. Enough with that. Let's just say that they portray humans in such a bad light. We turn into lazy senseless people after hundreds of years of being enthralled with "Buy N Large Megastore." I was a little insulted! And if the entire earth was completely covered in trash, you'd think if they could build a space ship that would last for 700 years, they could figure out what to do what all of that trash! I just don't understand how every other movie they have ever made has never been preachy or anything, why do it with one of the best characters they have ever created? I was honestly disappointed.
I love Wall-E the character. I didn't love this movie. Maybe I'm being too harsh. Am I the only one who feels this way?
This is Bryce. Apparently this will be a long comment. Sorry Missy.
As we kind of discussed at church I thought the movie was great. Pixar released its first preachy/political movie but at least it was not as bad as Happy Feet. It seems that is the current theme in a lot of movies is war and environmental issues, and I think that is a result of our great political hoopla.
The messages that I got from the movie are two things:
1. Thought it was funny how the robot that was created to clean the earth was taking on his surroundings in that he too started to collect junk in his "sleeping" area.
2. Though Wall-e was far fetched in its human portrayal the underlying theme is what bothers me most about where our society's customs seem to be going. E.G. Cell phone use and text messaging and how it is creating less face to face interaction, people's tendencies to buy what stores tell them to buy, and that people are getting fatter and fatter.
Again I didn't mean for this to turn out so long. I enjoyed the movie and think maybe y'all were being a little too harsh. I try to go into kids movie with fun in mind (Hence why I hate Happy Feet because it comes out of no where) and as an animated feature it was very gripping in the portrayal of emotions without words.
Okay, now this is actually Kelli. Well, I don't know about the harshness of anyone's statement, since I didn't see it. The only thing I know of that I did think was cool was the whole "Noah's Ark" idea of Eve going out to look for life, and bringing back the plant, and she's this white robot like a white dove... Not really what you were looking for, but I thought it was cool!
I actually enjoyed the movie. I thought it was thought-provoking with a message, but they didn't really cram it down your throat like they do in some other movies. Granted, they were showing the extremes of what could happen, but I think the underlying message is that we are too casual about not thinking of the consequences of our consumerism and the negative potential that technology has on the way we view the world and the people around us. I get what you're saying, but I was OK with it; Wall-E and Eve were great and they were able to convey so much emotion and personalit with very little dialogue and no facial expressions other than the eyes.
I haven't seen it, but now I want too, LOL. But I do think it is weird to play it off as a kid movie and get the kids all excited for it, and then have a political message slammed in there for teh grownups that have to tag along. Anyone remember Fern Gully? That was the first movie I can remember that had a message.
