Restaurant Review: Cousin Jack's Pasties

Tonight I picked up dinner on my way home at Cousin Jack's Pasties. This is a small restaurant in South Arlington owned by a young couple in our ward. They're originally from Michigan and ran a similar restaurant when they lived there. John's from Michigan and so he was excited to try a pastie because he's never had one. What's a pastie? It's a pastry filled with chopped sirloin, potatoes, onion and a bit of rutabaga. I honestly couldn't tell you what a rutabaga looks or tastes like. These things are huge, at about a pound each. I call it the mid-west version of the calzone.

The verdict? I thought it was alright, John loved it. But I'm a picky picky eater. And I mean picky! The pastry was awesome and Ben even ate a few bites, which surprised me. We'll definitely go back again, especially when it gets colder, but I'd encourage you all to try it out!

The lowdown. One pastie is about $4.50. Get a combo for about $6.75 and you get au jus, chips and a drink. Two people could split one because they're huge. And very filling. Visit them at www.cousinjackspasties.com and there's even a coupon!

Those look yummy! And at a good price too! Don't think it will help my diet though!! :)

I know about pasties from reading the Cat books where the main character Qwilleran lives up north and they are a staple up there like hamburgers are here. I guess I will get up my nerve and try one in honor of the cats.

hahaha, I have totally read those "cat who" books too! NOW I know what these things are! Next family day we will head down to support the local businesses! Looks yummy, and from reading the cat books I always wanted to try one!

Looks right up Bryce's alley. We'll probably be heading there some day soon.

Thanks Missy, we're always looking for new places to try. I keep trying to find restaurants to take Aaron to that are only around here. This place sounds yummy.

We've been there. Patrick and I thought it was alright, but we thought they could use more spice.

Oh, thanks for posting this. They are right down the street from my kids school. We were just talking about them at the school the other day because they brought some coupons by. I didn't know it is owned by members. Very cool. I'll have to encourage everyone to try it.
