PoliTalk

You all have noticed my political poll on my sidebar and many of you have voted. Thank you! I am following the election really closely because, in my mind, there is so much at stake. If any of you would like, let's start a little discussion.

I am voting for Mitt Romney. Not because he's a Mormon. Because he's the only guy that I think can handle the job. He is a true conservative and has a lot of experience in turning struggling companies around and he will be great for our country and the economy. He turned around an Olympics that was over budget, behind schedule and full of corruption. He's been a successful governor in Massachusetts for years and has cut taxes there and improved the economy. I know he doesn't have the most experience as a military man or with foreign policy, but that's why you choose really good people in your cabinet and as advisers. It helps that he has a wonderful family, a wife who he supports in her struggle with Multiple Sclerosis (which is what my dad had), has 5 sons who have all served missions and I think they have all married in the temple. I only hope that if he does get the nomination and is elected he will stick to his morals and do the right thing–and not be overtaken by the libs in Washington. I'm not saying he doesn't have his flaws, all of the candidates do (some more than others). All we can do is vote for who we think best fits what we are looking for and pray they do right by the country! And after last night's Republican debate, I would rather smack John McCain in the face than vote for him!

If you want the big picture of Mitt's life, here's a great story from Deseret News.

Who are you voting for and why?

Hmmm...interesting discussion, unfortunately, I probably will not vote in the state's primary, or caucus, or whatever Texas calls it. If I can get more informed before the vote, then I will, but I won't vote uninformed. I will most likely wait and see who is chosen and vote in the Presidential election in November. I can tell you that I don't like McCain, that's for sure!

I don't know yet. Maybe I'll vote for Clinton just to tick you off. :)

To begin with I am NOT voting for Hillary. (My mantra for this election is "anyone but Hillary".) Obama is very charismatic, but I dislike his stance on the war. It really irritates me that he has a 16-month troop withdrawal plan. Why would you tell your enemy when you plan on retreating?! Seems stupid to me. I really like McCain's stance on the war, and appreciate that he was a supporter of the troop surge. I also like what he says about illegal immigration. I am less fond of what Romney has to say about illegal immigration. But I do really like his stance on health care, and am very impressed by what he was able to do for healthcare in Massachusetts when he was the Governor there. I am also impressed with his business background and think he would be a very effective leader. I am a little worried about McCain's leadership abilities. He seems to have a more divisive personality (no warm fuzzies). I also like some of the things that Giuliani said, but sadly, he has dropped out of the race. (I'm less sad about Edwards dropping out. I find him to be a bit hypocritical parading himself around as someone who is trying to rid the country of poverty, but then paying $400 for a haircut.)
Talking politics is fun! Thanks for starting this!

gG GGGm... that was from Mary. She is not happy that I am typing instead of playing with her. So, I will make it quick. My original stance was that I would vote for someone with a temple reccommend over someone without one anyday. But then I started thinking about Harry Reid and decided that was not true. So I started researching. Honestly, I do not like that Mitt comes from a long line of politicians. I would like someone with experience but not someone intrenched in it. That said, I still like the guy in an economical sense. But I worry about him beating the democrats. And I sure know I do not want Hillary or even really Obama in the White House. Obama has started courting the Mormon vote incase Mitt loses. Good tactic... but not what I want. On the other hand, I really think McCain will alianate us from other countries quicker than any other candidate. Short comment long is that I do not know what will happen. I will vote for Mitt but I do not have a lot of hope in that coming to fruition... especially after McCain took Florida. But we will wait and see. Okay... Mary is at the end of her patience. Love ya!

You guys are all so smart, I love it!

Julie, I am 100% with you on not wanting another Clinton in the White House. Also on McCain's stance on the war (the one place he is consistent). I've heard people say that if there had been a recent terrorist attack, McCain would probably immediately get the nom. But now that the economy isn't perfect, it's better for Mitt. We'll see if that plays out!

I do agree with Randi, though, about Mitt coming from a history of politicians. This can be bad because you know how to play the game, and frankly, I don't like the game of Washington. The politics can be treacherous and people often end up thinking of their own advantage when it comes to policy. Mitt spent the majority of his last year as Governor in Mass to start his White House bid and I think he should have taken care of his state first.

Ultimately, I think if Mitt gets the nom and we're up against Hillary, we win. If it's Obama, I'm not so sure. And if it's McCain I have no idea what I will do because I don't trust him on social issues as far as I can throw him. Plus he's not personable.

I don't think Florida will be as big of a deal as Super Tuesday will. It's going to make me nervous. And if Hillary wins I think I just might cry.

Now, what do you think of Vice Presidential Noms? Who will be good for who?

Keep the comments coming guys, you're great!

Missy, you already know we are big Mitt fans for many reasons, only part of which includes the fact that he is Mormon. We really feel that it is our duty to keep the most moral leaders in our country as possible. No Mitt isn't perfect, but one wife, great families, strong values, conservative. (We also think Obama seems to have high family values). Also his views on healthcare are definately the best. Anyone who thinks subsidized health care or any kind of nation-wide healthcare is a good idea, you are very, very wrong. Try living in a country that has it for 1 month!! He is a smart businessman and knows how to organize and run things efficiently. People can't forget our economy, McCain knows nothing. He's smart on illegal immigration, Romney is. Also McCain is OLD and has a horrible temper, have you seen video of him EXPLODING!

We would vote for Obama over McCain but anyone over Clinton.

Sorry, longest post ever, but one more thing. President Eyring spent some time with Aaron (my husband) and his family and they asked him what the Brethren thought about Mitt running. They said their major concern was Mitt becoming the spokesperson for the Church instead of the Brethren. Like what Mitt does suddenly becomes what the Church does. They are very concerned to have someone in such a prominent position (just an FYI)

I should probably begin by apologizing for this being a long comment, because I'm sure it will be.
I realize some people are going to think this makes me a bad guy, but I really try to separate moral issues from political issues. Simply, in my opinion, Republicans stand for smaller government, which generally translates into fewer programs and less taxes. Democrats prefer a larger government, meaning more government runs programs and therefore larger taxes. Based on that alone I tend to vote Republican on a national level, where I want less interference with my day to day life, and Democrat on a more local level, with the people who I do want actually running programs.
Regarding illegal immigration - I think that anyone who thinks that we can actually round up several million people and send them back to Mexico is crazy. This is what Romney has said we should do. Firstly, there's no way we can even find all the illegal and secondly, even if you found them all there are all sorts of problems, not the least of which is if that illegal immigrant had a child here in the US that child is a US citizen that cannot be deported. Then what do you do with the parent? There has got to be some sort of amnesty program, although with stipulations, like they should have to pay back taxes, a fine, learn English, have jobs, etc. I know that was a long tangent, and really it is my only major qualm about Romney, but it really bothers me.
On a more positive note, have you heard him talk about what he did for healthcare in Massachusetts? His is one of the best plans I have heard for finding a way to make sure that everyone has health care. And it doesn't involve having the healthcare being completely run by the government.
I would vote for Romney first, then McCain, then Obama.
And no one has even mentioned Ron Paul?! I had some of his campaigners come to my door the other day. He has some pretty strange ideas.
Honestly, if Obama gets the nomination, I don't know if anyone can beat him.
