Day 4 - Your parents
These are my parents, Bill and Shirley Fowkes at their wedding reception. Aren't they so cute? They were married on October 24 but I honestly can't remember the year. My dad was born in 1942 and my mom in 43. My dad grew up on a ranch in Evanston, Wyoming with two brothers and deaf parents. My mom grew up in East Texas and Fort Worth with a younger brother and sister. It was the church that brought them together. My mom played the piano and my dad sang, so, naturally my mom ended up accompanying him at some point and then my older two sisters (who have a different dad) told my mom he needed to come over more often. And that's how the story goes. The quiet, unassuming guy from Wyoming meets and marries the spunky, divorced blonde from Texas. It was quite the scandal, but I have to say the rest of us couldn't be happier.
I think your mom looks like Melinda in that picture. That is so interesting that your dad's parents were deaf.
Bill told me once "I have never had an unhappy day with your mother." They had a truly loving marriage that has been an inspitation. I do wish Bill was around sometimes since he had a way of keeping Mom under control with that sweet "Now, Shirley!"
I love this picture. I remember your dad and loved the day that I made the connection that my grandpa used to watch your dads dad draw pictures in the dirt to tell the dogs what to do on the ranch. What a small world.
Missy! you don't know me, but I knew the Saunders family when we lived in Arlington 1st ward. I came across your blog via Mubeen H.'s and I just saw that your Mom is Shirley Fowkes!! Oh my gosh! What a small world! I knew your Mom in Arlington too! When I was on the Stake Activities Committee is when I first met her. She may not even remember me, but I never forgot her! She's a great lady. Please tell her "hello!" from me! :) It's great to read all about your family! You have a wonderful family there!
